Company Profile: Shady Rays sells fashionable sunglasses in over 140 styles. Founded in 2012, they started out packing orders in their basement and now they fulfill thousands of orders worldwide.

Shady Rays entered the market with a unique proposal. To sell designer quality polarized sunglasses at a reasonable price. The market responded quickly. When they were founded in 2012, they were fulfilling around twenty orders per day in their basement. Now, in 2019 they can fulfill ten thousand orders in a single day in their brand new state-of-the-art warehouse.
The Shady Rays Story
To say they’ve come a long way since the days of packaging orders in the basement is an understatement. In many ways, they have disrupted (in a good way) the business of selling sunglasses with a truly unique business model.
Co-owner Dan Ratterman put it succinctly when he said that they noticed that that ‘people will buy a pair of expensive sunglasses, and almost everybody would either lose them or break them at some point.’
This lead them to entering the market at a very reasonable price point for high-quality, shatter proof polarized sunglasses in a wide array of fashionable styles. The average price for shades is around $48, and the quality and style is comparable to products offered at double to quadruple that price point.
But the value doesn’t end there. Every pair comes with a lifetime guarantee and two free replacements for when a pair is inevitably lost or broken. Their business model fully stands by their mantra of “Live Hard. We got you.”
And they plan to continue the momentum. When they started, they had only around three different styles of sunglasses. Now, they offer over 140, and are they are constantly working to expand their product offerings to snow goggles and eyeglasses.
Giving Back To The Community
One of the most unique aspects of the business model is the commitment to philanthropy and helping those in need. For every pair of sunglasses sold, Shady Rays donates 10 meals to the needy through a partnership with Feeding America.
According to Dan, this part of their mission drives them to do what they do.
Partnership With SkuVault
The user interface is extremely straight forward. It’s very simple to go in, set up and train people on it.
Shady Rays moved into a new warehouse and distribution center in early 2019. SkuVault was instrumental not only as a software partner, but also in providing support for how best to set up the warehouse and workflows.
SkuVault helps them with not only managing inventory levels, but with many other aspects of order fulfillment. Picking features help them to efficiently pick, pack and ship out orders on time.
The inventory reporting lets them know when an item is running low and when it’s time to restock. This feature is one of the last lines of defense against oversells and having to cancel orders.
The ease of the SkuVault system has helped them to more quickly turn around their orders, which in turn gives Shady Rays the time and ability to expand their business.
